The difference between hazards, disasters, and catastrophes:
- Hazards are a natural process or event that is a possible threat to human life and property
- Disasters are a hazardous event that occurs over a limited time span in a defined area, where one of the following occurs, 10 or more people are killed, 100 or more people are effected, a state of emergency is declared, international assistance is requested.
- Catastrophe is a massive disaster the requires significant expenditure of money and significant amount of time to recover
